Type your jumbled letters and this unscrambler returns every word that can be made from them, grouped from longest to shortest. It searches a list of 46,600 English words between three and nine letters, and it runs entirely in your browser, so there is no sign up and nothing is sent anywhere.

How to use the word unscrambler

Type your letters into the box. Order does not matter, so RETINAS and INSTREA give the same results.
Press Enter or tap Unscramble.
Results appear grouped by length, longest first, with the Scrabble value of each word beside it.
Tap any word to copy it.

For a blank tile or an unknown letter, type a question mark. RETIN?S treats the sixth position as any letter, which widens the search considerably. You can use up to three blanks.

What the four filters do

The filters narrow a long result list. They can be combined.

Starts with keeps only words beginning with those letters. Useful when a crossword or a Wordle row has already fixed the opening.
Ends with keeps only words with that ending. Handy for hunting suffixes such as ING, IER or EST.
Contains keeps words with that run of letters anywhere inside them.
Exact length shows only words of one length. Set it to 5 and the tool becomes a five letter word finder.

Filter letters still have to come from the letters you entered, or from a blank.

Getting more out of your letters

Look at the longest group first. In a rack of seven, a seven letter word is worth far more than two short ones, and it empties your hand.
Check the points, not just the length. A short word using J, Q, X or Z often beats a longer word made of ones.
For Wordle, set Exact length to 5 and use Contains for a confirmed yellow letter, or Starts with for a green opening letter.
Add a blank when you are stuck. One question mark shows what a single new letter would unlock, which is a good way to pick a probe word.
Remember the list is three to nine letters. Paste ten or more letters and you will still get results, just nothing longer than nine.

How many words does it search?

46,600 English words between three and nine letters long. The list is a standard American English spelling dictionary, so it leaves out abbreviations, Roman numerals and proper nouns.

Does it work for Scrabble and Words with Friends?

It finds the words and shows standard Scrabble letter values. It is a general English dictionary rather than an official tournament word list, so a handful of obscure tournament-only words will be missing.

What does the question mark do?

It stands for a blank tile or a letter you do not know yet. Each question mark can become any letter, and you can use up to three.

Are my letters sent to a server?

No. The word list downloads once and the matching runs in your browser.

Why is a word I expected missing?

Either it is longer than nine letters, or it is not in the dictionary. Plurals and verb forms are included where the dictionary lists them.
